Lipedema Canada and the Lipedema Manitoba Association are thrilled to share groundbreaking news: Manitoba is officially the first province in Canada to recognize June 11th as Lipedema Awareness Day.
This announcement came directly from Manitoba’s Minister of Health, Seniors and Long-term Care, the Honourable Uzoma Asagwara, and marks a historic milestone in the fight for better recognition, care, and understanding of lipedema in Canada.
“Thank you for your advocacy and continued efforts to raise awareness about Lipedema in Manitoba. I am pleased to inform you that the Government of Manitoba intends to proclaim June 11 as Lipedema Awareness Day, beginning in 2026. This proclamation reflects our commitment to increasing awareness and recognizing those affected by Lipedema. We appreciate your dedication to this cause and look forward to working together to increase awareness and understanding of Lipedema across the province.”
Honourable Uzoma Asagwara, Deputy Premier, Minister of Health, Seniors and Long-term Care
A Milestone for Lipedema Recognition
For far too long, lipedema has been misunderstood and under-recognized in Canada. Access to basic care, including assessment, diagnosis, compression therapy, and treatment options such as lipedema surgery, has been limited and fraught with barriers.
This milestone represents a turning point. It is proof that policymakers are listening and are willing to take tangible action to improve the lives of those affected by this chronic and often painful condition.
Lipedema Canada and Lipedema Manitoba Association are incredibly grateful to Minister Asagwara and the Manitoba government for their leadership, compassion, and commitment to advancing lipedema awareness and care. This step forward demonstrates what can be achieved when patients, advocates, and governments work together.
National Momentum for Change
The tireless advocacy efforts of our volunteer directors and community members continue to move lipedema care forward across Canada. Lipedema Canada is actively meeting with provincial governments nationwide, encouraging them to follow Manitoba’s lead in recognizing lipedema and addressing the urgent need for equitable care and support.
We hope Manitoba’s actions will inspire other provinces to take similar steps toward recognition and access to care for all Canadians living with lipedema.
